Where do you meet, how often?
I have been teaching for twelve year at plaza Martes de Artes, right next to the El Neto store, by the Tepito subway station. We generally meet there for meetings or to celebrate something, a birthday for example, we meet there, in Martes de Artes.
Soundsystems that you have accompanied and danced to
We have performed alongside most of the renowned soundsystems and also less famous ones, we have shared incredible moments with all of them.
The song that brings the most joy to the dance is
One of the important songs that we enjoy the most is when a son montuno is organized and everyone can dance to the rhythm of son, in the company of all the clubs. That is something very beautiful, when we all get together and dance in unison.
Emergence of the club
We came from other clubs at the time, and we began to meet up at certain soundsystem street dances or ‘tocadas’. I was the one people called because I knew places to go dancing and was familiar with some soundsystems, so we would discuss the plans and arrange to meet. People came from places like Ciudad Lagos, Ecatepec, Iztapalapa, Neza, Azcapotzalco, Tepito, and we would meet at some point and then move together to the dances. Social media wasn’t well established yet, so communication was by calls to home or cell phone. Now, with social media, everything is faster via Whatsapp.
Founding of the club
Founded on November 21, 2013 in Mexico City, and in 2015 in Richmond, California
Genres they like to dance to
We like to dance salsa, cumbia and guaracha, son montuno and son.
An unforgettable moment
Unforgettable moments include performing on important stages, appearing on television (we have been on Televisión Azteca, Televisa, Bandamax, on paid cable programs, Viva TV). These are some of the most important accomplishments. We have also been in the Zócalo and it’s worth noting that we took part in the event of the Declaration of Intangible Cultural Heritage, alongside the soundsystem community.
Three fundamental reasons to go dancing through life
- An important reason is to promote the culture of dance, so that it is not lost, it is a cultural heritage that we are going to leave as a legacy for our children, our grandchildren. I think it is very important that these types of events are organized to give more and more diffusion to what sound system culture is, I think it is an important project and I am happy to be a part of it as a member and founder of the Club del Montón, and I let my cell in Richmond, California know this.
